Re: Champions League 2013/14
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso have been charged by UEFA for their respective antics during the Champions League final.
Simeone stormed onto the pitch and confronted Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after Cristiano Ronaldo scored Real’s scored fourth goal from the penalty spot.
Varane kicked the ball towards Simeone, who launched it back at the centre-back in anger and ran onto the pitch in pursuit.
Varane was protected by his team-mates, while Simeone, who seemed intent of attacking the young defender had to be restrained by his backroom staff, before saying: “I’ll see you in the tunnel.”
Simeone, in justification of his actions explained: “He shouldn’t have done that and it upset me. He’s not big enough to do something like that to me.”
“I was angry although maybe I overreacted.”
UEFA will also investigate the altercation between the referee and the Atletico boss over the amount of added time awarded at the end of the second half.
The severity of Simeone’s ban is yet to be announced, but the Argentine is likely to miss some important Champions’ League group stage matches next season, with possibility of facing a touchline ban for all six matches.
Xabi Alonso is also likely to miss a few matches after a ‘Breach of general principles of conduct’, when he ran onto the Estadio da Luz pitch.
Alonso was suspended for the match, after picking up a booking in the second leg of Real Madrid’s semi-final tie with Bayern Munich for a rash challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Despite a Real Madrid appeal, the 31-year-old was forced to sit out the final, taking a seat in the stands.
Alonso was visibly emotional throughout the match, and failed to contain himself when Gareth Bale put Real Madrid ahead in extra time.
He jumped from his seat in the stands onto the pitch a raced down the touchline to join in the celebrations with his team-mates, meaning he may be sitting in the stands for a bit longer.
In addition, both sides are to be fined for receiving more the five yellow cards each, with seven for Atletico and five for Real. They may also be charged based on the actions of their fans, who set off fireworks
The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Board will meet on the 17th of July to discuss the severity of the punishment for all parties involved.
