Re: Cleveland Cavaliers
Antawn Jamison expects to stick around the entire season with the Cleveland Cavaliers
By Tom Reed, The Plain Dealer
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Antawn Jamison is the only Cavaliers player who was a part of the 1998-99 NBA lockout that reduced the season to 50 games over three months.
So what was his initial reaction Monday night to the unveiling of the Cavs’ 66-game schedule, one that spans just 122 days?
“Wow. That’s all you can say,” Jamison said laughing. “Even though it’s 14 years ago, I was just thinking about how my body felt then as a rookie you try to mentally prepare yourself for so many games in a compact season.”
Jamison joined a group of 10 players working out Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic Courts practice facility. The 35-year-old power forward says his fractured left pinkie is completely healed and he’s eager to be part of the franchise’s rebuilding process.
He doesn’t expect to be traded or waived through the amnesty clause. (Baron Davis is considered the primary amnesty candidate, if the Cavs use the provision.)
“I look at it as, ‘If I didn’t go anywhere last year, I’m not going anywhere this year,’” said Jamison, who’s likely to start. “My value now is even greater than it was last year with Tristan and Samardo (Samuels) being here. These guys can learn a lot from me. (
)”
A couple other Jamison, NBA notes:
• He had nine screws and two plates inserted into his pinkie and hand. He suffered the injury on Feb.27 in a game against Philadelphia. It’s a nasty looking digit that will could remain permanently crooked.
• Jamison said he regrets grousing last season when coach Byron Scott benched him in favor of J.J. Hickson. The experience, he said, toughened him mentally. He’s willing to mentor rookie power forward Tristan Thompson, even if it means serving as a backup again this season.
“Last year was a tough time. The coaching staff and me have a better understanding. I was disappointed with myself how I handled the beginning of the season. I love the organization.”
• Jamison was surprised by the off-season Hickson trade, but likes what he sees in Omri Casspi.
"I like what he brings to the table and what he brings to the this team, the toughness. He brings a certain dimension – being able to shoot it and put it on the floor and a certain toughness that we didn’t have last year,” he said.
• The Cavs have 10 of their 16 players participating in voluntary workouts at the facility. Rookie Kyrie Irving, finishing up classes at Duke, could be here as soon as Thursday. Davis is expected in town on Thursday night.
• NBA players were to begin voting electronically Wednesday on the new collective bargaining agreement. The rank-and-file have until late afternoon Thursday to complete voting.
Cleveland Cavaliers' Anderson Varejao is back on his feet, eager for season to start
By Mary Schmitt Boyer, The Plain Dealer
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — For Anderson Varejao, it's good to be back -- in Cleveland, at the team's practice facility, with a basketball in hand.
"I am so excited to be back and be playing again," Varejao said Friday after working out with Cavaliers teammates Ramon Sessions, Luke Harangody, Samardo Samuels and Manny Harris.
Varejao, the Cavs' popular power forward, declared himself 100 percent recovered from surgery on Feb. 12 to repair a torn tendon in his right foot. He suffered the injury during a running drill at practice Jan. 6, so he didn't play basketball for 11 months.
Never before had he gone 11 months without playing.
"That was the first time," he said.
After missing the final 47 games of last season, Varejao spent most of his time rehabilitating at home in Brazil over the summer. He was able to run and shoot, but he didn't have any contact until returning to Cleveland about a month ago.
So nobody was happier to see the inside of the Cavs' practice facility on Thursday than Varejao.
"It was good to be back there," he said. "I feel like I'm at home when I'm there.
"I'm very excited. I'm really excited to see my friends and the fans. Everybody's excited. I can't wait for the season to start."
Although NBA players were able to return to their team's facilities this week, it will be another week until training camp officially starts -- pending final agreement between players and management on the new collective bargaining agreement.
Varejao thinks most of his teammates will be back by Monday. He's looking forward to that -- and to getting to know rookies Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. He met them before the lockout, but he hasn't been in touch since.
He closely followed the news of the lockout and always had faith there would be a season, which was why he tried to stay in shape in spite of the uncertainty. Now he's eager to see what kind of condition he's in.
He said his foot gets a little sore after a tough workout, but he wants to test it in practice.
"I need to go through a practice to see how I feel," he said. "I won't really know until I start running and doing drills."
He envisions a much healthier and improved team from the one that went 19-63 last season.
"Without injuries, I believe we can do much better," he said. "We're going to try to get to the playoffs." (

Cavaliers Re-Sign Anthony Parker
The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard/forward Anthony Parker to a contract, General Manager Chris Grant announced. Per league and team policy, terms of the contract were not announced.
“Bringing back Anthony was a high priority for us. We place great value on the leadership, professionalism and veteran presence he brings both on the court and in the locker room,” said General Manager Chris Grant. “His high basketball IQ, ability to shoot with range and play solid perimeter defense made re-signing him extremely important for us.”

Prevedibile.
