yracuse, NY - Brandon Triche acknowledges it was difficult to say goodbye.

The former Syracuse University and Jamesville-DeWitt guard turned down an offer from Trento, the team he led to an Italian League championship this spring. Instead, he will play for Rome this season. Both teams will compete in Italy's highest professional basketball league - Serie A - but Rome's advantage is that it also competes in the Eurocup, which offers opportunities to compete across the continent.

"I wanted to advance my career, money-wise, but more importantly, basketball-wise," Triche said by telephone today. "I wanted to go to a place where I was going to get a lot of exposure, get better and have the best opportunity to get better.

"Rome plays in the Eurocup, which allows them to travel twice a week throughout Europe and play different teams. And I felt that was more important than going back to Trento. Even though they matched as far as pay, I thought it was better to play and travel more."

Triche's performance in the Serie A2 Gold League playoffs helped catapult Trento from essentially the Triple A of the Italian professional league to the Major Leagues: By virtue of its playoff championship, Trento moved up a division.

His Trento teammates and the organization treated Triche kindly. As a young player living on his own for the first time, Triche often felt homesick and isolated. His teammates, he said, embraced him and his dad when the elder Triche visited.

Triche today called his former Trento colleagues "loyal."

"A lot of times they say in these European cities just to leave when you're winning, not when you're losing," Triche said. "Because if you leave when you're winning, you can always go back."

Triche has yet to sign his Rome contract. He examined the contract today, he said, and likely will sign sometime this week after solidifying details about particular pay dates.

He met the Rome GM in Las Vegas, where Triche was a member of the New York Knicks Summer League team. Triche rarely played in that tournament, after spending time with the organization learning the triangle offense.

"Personally, it was disappointing, to be honest," he said. "After playing in Trento and playing well, I didn't want to play in the Summer League. I wanted to spend 2-3 years working overseas without the NBA having a close eye on me and then come back and play summer ball. My agent thought it would be a good idea to go to the Knicks. But we just kind of dropped the ball on that."

Triche was asked whether the weeks of working out with good teammates in a structured environment mitigated the disappointment.

"I guess so," he said, "but mentally if you get down, it takes a while to get back up."

He is unsure when he will be asked to report to training camp, but believes it will be some time later next month. Rome officials told him he was the second player they'd signed. Triche said he was excited to experience basketball in the bustling, historic city.

"The city is bigger, there's more to do," he said. "In Trento, I had a lot of free time which really allowed me to think about home and fall deeper into homesickness. This time, I think I will recover faster."
